How we Value Bicycles

How is the market value of an older bike calculated?

Market value means the best-estimated price that a willing buyer would pay a willing seller for an item in an open and competitive market for a bicycle, component, accessory or wheelset of a similar make, model, quality, material, condition, function, type and age.
The market value is determined by taking the average of the values of similar items listed for sale in the open market (like used bicycle sale websites) at the time of a claim.

Bicycle Security Questions

How should I store my bicycle at home?

When storing your bicycle at home it is vital that you meet the policy security requirements, otherwise your claim may not be accepted. We have summarised these requirements in the Security Conditions section of the policy wording. Please have a read through this section to ensure you understand the minimum security requirements of the policy.
If your bike is stolen from your home, we’ll need evidence of forced or violent entry when you make a claim.

If your bicycle is left anywhere else on your property, for instance, in an open garage or garden shed, it must be secured to an immovable object with an approved lock.

Can I store my bike in a garage?

Yes, as long as the garage meets these criteria:


       
  • Privately accessible
  • Fully enclosed
  • Built of brick, concrete or stone
  • Roofed with slate, tiles or multi-layered roof attached to/within the boundaries of your property
  • Doors must be fitted with a 5 lever Mortice lock, a uPVC Multipoint door lock, or a Chubb/ Yale/ Union deadlock to BS3621 standard, or a CEN Grade 3 closed shackle padlock
  • The bicycle must not be visible from the outside
  • Any electric or ‘up and over’ garage door must be approved by ‘Secured by Design’.
Can I store my bike in a shed?

Yes, you can store your bicycle in a wooden or plastic shed, but it must be secured correctly. The shed must be:


  • Privately accessible
  • Securely locked
  • Be located within the boundaries of your property
  • Your bicycle must be secured to an immovable object through the frame and any quick release wheels with an approved loc

If you store your bicycle in a metal shed, the shed must be:


  • Located within the boundaries of your property
  • Permanently fixed to a concrete base
  • Securely locked by the standard locking mechanism of the shed (minimum of a 3-point locking system)
How should I store my bicycle away from home? What are the situations where my bike needs to be locked?

If you leave your bike unattended when in town, at a friend’s, during a café stop, etc. your bike needs to be locked through its main frame and all quick release wheels to an immovable object through the frame using an approved lock.

How should I store my bicycle while it’s being transported?

Your bicycle is covered for theft from a vehicle, as long as you have adhered to the following:



  • Your bicycle is locked inside an enclosed car boot and is not visible from the outside, or
  • Your bicycle is locked inside a car (without an enclosed car boot) and locked through the frame and any quick release wheels to a secure anchor point by an approved lock, or
  • Your bicycle is locked and secured to a properly fixed bicycle rack via the lockable security provision of the bicycle rack and a Thatcham approved alarm was fitted and active; or
  • Your bicycle is locked and secured through the frame of the bicycle to a properly fixed bicycle rack with an approved lock and a Thatcham approved alarm was fitted and active.
Do you have stipulations about bike boxes?

If you’re going on a plane with your bike, your bicycle and/or accessories must be securely packed in appropriate transportation equipment that fully encloses and protects your bicycle and/or accessories in their entirety.

How should I lock up my bicycle?

You should lock your bicycle securely through the frame and quick release wheels, and then to an immovable object using one of our approved locks.

A combination of a D-lock and a keyed, armour-padded cable is particularly effective.

How do I know if I have an approved lock?

Approved locks vary depending on the insured value of the bike: Bikes worth less than £1,000 – Sold Secure, Silver rated lock. Bikes worth £1,000 or more – Sold Secure, Gold rated lock. Visit the Sold Secure website to find out the rating of your lock.

Is my bike covered for theft away from home?

Yes. Unlike most home & contents insurance, your bicycle is covered against theft both from home and away from home.

Bicycle Insurance Cover

Why should I use Sundays if my bike is covered under my home & contents insurance?

While your home & contents insurance may provide some cover for your bike, there might be limitations to the value and it’s unlikely to comprehensively cover many of the situations unique to cycling. Sundays specialist insurance ensures you can select the cover that’s right for you. You can enjoy optional benefits such as racing cover, worldwide cover, and cover for your accessories and wheelsets.

Do I have to insure the contents of my home with Sundays to be able to get cover for my bikes?

No. We only provide specialist bicycle insurance and cyclist insurance, so you can’t insure any other home contents with us.

What questions can I ask my home & contents insurance provider to find out if my bike is covered?

Many cyclists think their bicycle is covered under another insurance policy they may have, such as home & contents insurance. They may only find out they’re not sufficiently covered when it’s time to claim, and by that point it’s too late. What many cyclists don’t realise is that most home & contents policies have low limits on coverage for sporting equipment (like bicycles). Low limits mean that your bicycle might only be covered for a stated policy limited amount like £500, even if you paid £5,000 for it. Along with this, home & contents insurance policies rarely provide any coverage if you have an accident or your bike is stolen away from home. To find out how well your bike is covered under your home & contents policy, here are some questions you can ask your current or potential insurer:

How much will it cost to insure my bicycle?

We don’t do a one-size-fits-all approach. One of the benefits of Sundays is that your premiums are personalised to your bike year and model, and you can choose optional covers. Unfortunately, this makes it difficult to give you one figure that applies to everyone. Can I get a hire bike if my own is stolen or damaged?

Absolutely! We will reimburse you up to £500 for bicycle hire while you await the repair or replacement of your bike, arising from an approved claim.

Do you choose the bike shop to carry out the repair or replacement of my bicycle?

We’re passionate supporters of the cycling industry, especially bike shops.We are happy to and would actually prefer to work with your bike shop of choice, but we retain the right to choose a repairer if, for example, the bike shop does not have the necessary expertise or stock to carry out a specific assessment. In such a case, we’ll make use of an assessor of our own choosing.

I have made an insurance claim for my bicycle before, will this affect my cover?

Probably not, but in some circumstances it might. Every policy is assessed individually, so it’s important that you give us all the information we need during the quoting process, especially if you’ve had any bicycle-related losses in the past three years. Any gaps in your details might affect future claims so if in doubt, let us know.

Is my bike covered if it is stolen mid-ride?

Yes. With Sundays your bike is covered if, for instance, a light-fingered passer-by steals it while you’re enjoying a mid-ride coffee stop. There are conditions though: The bike must be in your line of sight and at most five metres from where you’re sitting, otherwise it must be locked through its main frame by an approved lock to an immovable object.

Is my bike covered for accidental damage if I drive into an indoor car park or garage, forgetting that it’s fastened to the roof rack?

Yes. Many home & contents insurers won’t cover this sort of thing but as cyclists ourselves, we know that repairing or replacing a mangled carbon frame can cost thousands. We’ve got your bike covered while transporting it on your roof rack, subject to policy terms and conditions.

Will you cover damage to my roof rack or bike rack?

We cover an insured bicycle that is damaged while fastened to a roof rack or bike rack, but we don’t cover the rack itself. It’s worth checking with your auto insurer as this sort of coverage is typically provided there. Make sure to check whether they require you to specify your bike rack as an extra accessory for the coverage to be in place.

Is my bike covered if it is stolen from my home and worth more than £3,000?

Yes. Sundays can insure bikes up to the value of £15,000 each. Note, your whole bicycle collection can exceed this value as long as each individual machine comes in under that number. While we can only provide online quotes for bikes valued at up to £15,000 we may consider bikes with a higher value. Please give us a call on 0203 198 2828 for a specialised quote.

Am I covered for personal injury if I have a cycling accident?

Yes, if you have selected our cyclist insurance cover then we will provide personal accident benefits if you’re involved in a crash. Subject to policy terms and conditions.

Is my bike covered if I have a crash during a race?

Yes. Many traditional home & contents insurers won’t cover race damage, but we’ve got your back. You simply need to add optional racing cover to your bicycle insurance policy to ensure it’s covered during races, triathlons, and sportives - this excludes professional or sponsored athletes.

How much should I cover my bicycle for?

Although we can’t give you advice on the exact value you should insure your bicycle for, we can tell you how we will determine the bicycle value in the event of a claim arising. When we accept a claim, we calculate the claim value as follows:

       
  • We’ll consider the recommended retail price up to the sum insured when the bicycle was purchased new by you at the time of the claim.
  • For bicycles purchased second-hand, we’ll consider the market value. To calculate this, deduct 20% off the bicycle's recommended retail price for the first year, 10% for the second year, and 5% for each subsequent year from the date of purchase.
What level of cover do I need?

That depends on how you use your bike. For example, will you be using it to race or taking it with you on overseas trips? We offer a range of customised cover add-ons, like racing & event cover and worldwide cover. My bike is worth £5,000. Can I still get insurance?

Yes. With Sundays insurance, you can insure your bicycles between £250 and £15,000 for individual machines. While we can only provide online quotes for bikes valued at up to £15,000 we may consider bikes with a higher value. Please give us a call on 0203 198 2828 for a specialised quote.

My bike is quite old, is it worth insuring?

It doesn’t matter how old your bicycle is. As long as its market value is over £250 we can cover it.

What risks am I covered for?

We want to ensure you can always ride with peace of mind, so we’ve designed our product to cover you for a range of out-of-home cycling scenarios including:

Do you cover more than one bicycle per policy and do I get a multi-bike discount?

We know you can only ride one bike at a time - but you can own many more! Setting up multiple bikes on one policy is easy. Just indicate you want to cover multiple bikes during the quoting process and you’ll qualify for 20% off on each additional bike you add. This is only applicable across all listed bicycles and excludes accessories and other selections. Finally, a great excuse to get that new bike you’ve had your eye on!

What is the maximum bicycle value Sundays will insure?

The maximum value for individual bicycles is £15,000, but you can exceed that number if you cover multiple bikes. While we can only provide online quotes for bikes valued at up to £15,000 we may consider bikes with a higher value. Please give us a call on 0203 198 2828 for a specialised quote

Do you cover e-bikes like mine?

Yes, we love pedal power! We cover all electric ‘pedal assist’ bikes with up to 250 watts of maximum output and a top speed of 15.5 miles per hour. Please note, that you are not covered for and will not receive any benefit in respect of your e-bike unless its specified as covered on your Policy Schedule.

We don’t cover bicycles fitted with internal combustion engines or other sources of power assistance. Your e-bike must have started off life as an e-bike, and not be a retrofitted regular road bike or mountain bike.

Here’s the full definition, if you’re in any doubt: “If reflected as covered in the schedule as an Electric Bicycle, a vehicle or vehicles, insured hereunder, consisting of two wheels held in a frame one behind the other, propelled by human power with pedals (but assisted by an electric motor of no more than 250 watts maximum power output, such electric motor should not be able to propel the bicycle when it’s travelling at more than 15.5 miles per hour) and steered with handlebars attached to the front wheel. The power output or manufacturer of the motor and the battery’s voltage or maximum speed of the bike must be displayed.”

Can pro athletes or sponsored riders use Sundays insurance?

Unfortunately not. We define professional racing as partaking in activities with your bicycle for which you may be potentially remunerated (in money or any other form).We do cover amateur racers who purchased their bicycles with no more than a 50% discount, but we’re unable to cover anyone who earns an income from racing. What if my bicycle is damaged in a road traffic accident with an uninsured driver?

We know that getting caught up in a collision with a vehicle is every cyclists’ worst nightmare, and we want to give you one less thing to stress about. Whether or not the driver is insured, your bicycle will be covered under our bicycle insurance and we’ll either repair or replace your bike as soon as possible. If you get covered with our cyclist liability insurance, you’ll also receive personal accident cover up to £20,000.

What if I get a new bicycle?

Firstly, congratulations! A new bike is always a cause for celebration at Sundays. Whether you’re adding a new bike to your line-up or replacing your current one, we make it easy to get it covered. If it’s been less than 30 days since purchase, simply send us your receipt to prove condition and ownership. Outside of that window, you can send us some high-resolution photos. Can I insure my bike just for the racing season?

Yes, but you’ll need to add racing cover to your policy. Our policies are twelve months in length, but the premium is paid monthly with no interest charges. To offer you flexibility, policies can be cancelled at any time by contacting us on 0203 198 2828 or email us at [email protected]

What do you consider to be accidental damage?

We define accidental damage as any damage caused to your bicycle, components or accessories due to sudden, unforeseen incidents, cycling accidents, or events that occur during the policy period.

Can family members ride my bicycle and still be covered?

Yes, our bicycle insurance coverage includes your immediate family which shall mean any child, stepchild, parent, stepparent, spouse, sibling, life partner, or civil partner and shall include adoptive relationships, given they are over 16 years old and reside at your home on a permanent basis.

Are my bike accessories covered?

Yes. You can add all sorts to your policy – including panniers, a GPS computer, and racing wheels – up to a total value of £5,000. You’ll need to list each item when quoting on cover online. Do you cover custom components and additional wheelsets?

Yes, just ensure you add them to your Policy Schedule.

Are my accessories or additional wheels covered if I loan them to a friend?

No, we don't cover your accessories or wheelsets while they’re being used by anyone but you. Remember, we only cover these items if they form part of your insurance policy and are damaged or stolen in a covered loss.

What’s the difference between a custom part and an additional accessory?

At Sundays, we define a ‘custom part’ as a part or component you’ve fitted to your bicycle as a replacement to a manufacturer-supplied part. It must be listed on your policy schedule and its value included in the total sum insured of your bicycle. For example, if you swap out the wheels that came with the bike for a set of your choice, this is considered a custom part and should be included in the bike’s insured value. An ‘accessory’, on the other hand, is any additional piece of cycling equipment that is added to your bicycle, but which isn’t core to the operation of the bicycle, for example a GPS unit or headlight. These items are added to your policy individually with the premium calculated on the value of each item listed.

What information do I need to provide?

We will ask you to provide us with information about the incident and might request things like your bicycle’s purchase receipt, photos of the damage to your bicycle and/or photos of the incident area. If your bicycle was stolen, we will require proof that you complied with the security conditions of the policy. This might be a purchase receipt for the lock, the lock key and/or evidence of forcible entry. All instances involving theft or attempted theft require a police report in order to make a claim.

What is the excess on my claim?

What is an accident?

An accident is an unforeseen incident that happens unexpectedly and unintentionally, typically resulting in damage or injury. We define it in the policy wording as follows: Accidental damage means damage caused to your bicycle, components or accessories arising from a sudden, unforeseen, specific incident or event that happens during the period of insurance.

What is not an accident?

Normal wear and tear on the bike is not accidental, and will not be covered. A few examples of normal wear and tear is a drivetrain wearing, chain stretching or tire issues, brake pad replacement, etc.

Do I have to provide proof of ownership?

Yes. Without this information, we might not be able to pay your claim - that’s why we ask for it at the time you take out your policy.

How can I prove ownership?

If you purchase your bicycle insurance policy when your bike was bought within the last 30 days, all you need to do is send us a copy of the purchase receipt. Had your bike for more than 30 days? We ask you to take a high-resolution image (a current smartphone will do the job) of each side of your bicycle. The photos you send us should include:

       
  • A sheet of paper that clearly displays your policy number.
  •    
  • Do not obscure any part of your bicycle.
  •    
  • Make sure you provide a clear image of your bicycle’s serial number. This can usually be found on the underside of the bottom bracket so you may need to turn your bike upside down to get a good picture. Other common serial number locations include the headset and rear stays.
What happens after I make a claim?

Once we’ve approved your claim, there are a couple of possible outcomes: We’ll either repair or replace your bicycle or the stolen/damaged item or pay you the reasonable cost of replacing or repairing the bicycle or item. At each stage of your claim we will provide you with updates as we handle the legwork, so keep an eye on your inbox.

Why has my claim been declined?

When your claim is declined we will always provide you with the reason, so that you can understand the decision we have made. You can contact us on 0203 198 2828 or at [email protected] at any stage with questions regarding our decision. If you are not satisfied with our decision, you may contact our customer service team on the above details and they will escalate your complaint to ensure it’s resolved.

Your Sundays Policy

I haven’t received my Policy Schedule. What should I do?

If you can’t find your Policy Schedule in your email inbox, first check it’s not hiding in your spam folder, then make sure you’ve provided us with the correct email address.If everything looks correct, give us a call on 0203 198 2828 or email us at [email protected] and we’ll work it out.If you’ve requested hardcopies of your insurance documents by post, please allow five business days for their arrival. If you still haven’t received them after five business days, give us a call or email us.

I can’t open a PDF document. What should I do?

If you’re having trouble opening PDFs, make sure you’ve downloaded the most up-to-date version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Can I pay for my policy monthly?

Yes, you have the option to pay monthly or annually for your policies.

What happens at the end of my 12 month policy period?

To make sure that you’re always riding with cover, your policy will renew automatically after 12 months. But don’t worry, we’ll email you at least three weeks before renewal is due and you’ll then have a further 14-day cooling off period during which you’ll incur no administrative fees if you change your mind. If you decide you don’t want to renew your policy, give us a call on 0203 198 2828 or email us at [email protected]

Can I purchase the policy online?

Yes. Just get a quote, provide your payment details, and you’re ready to ride with peace of mind.

Can I add to or make changes to my policy?

Absolutely. If you get a new bike or move address during your policy, give us a call on 0203 198 2828 or email us at [email protected] to update your policy. Keep in mind that some changes may affect your premium. If you wish to cancel your policy, refunds are payable where the premium has been paid annually in advance and is calculated on a pro-rata basis, less any administration fees.

How do I update my payment details?

Give us a call on 0203 198 2828 or email us at [email protected] and one of our friendly consultants will be happy to assist. Alternatively, you can sign-in and update your card details online.

How do automatic renewals work?

When your 12-month policy reaches its anniversary, it will automatically renew for another year unless you request otherwise. We send a renewal notification by email 2-3 weeks in advance of the date as a reminder, also attaching the relevant information and documentation for the new term. If you want to continue to cover your bike with us, simply do nothing and the policy will renew.

How does the cooling-off period work?

If you decide that this policy is not for you and you have not made a claim, you may cancel this policy within 14 days of it starting (this also applies to each renewal period).If you cancel within the cooling-off period, we will refund any premiums you have paid for the policy. Even after this 14 day cooling-off period ends, you still have cancellation rights.

Can Sundays cancel my policy?

We may cancel your policy if you:

  • Do not comply with the policy terms and conditions
  • Do not pay your premium as agreed
  • Make a fraudulent claim
  • Misrepresented information when you entered into your policy

If we pay a claim for a total loss, your policy comes to an end and there is no refund of premium.
