All these baseline electric bike features are all good and well, but they also come at a cost and with their own safety and precautionary parameters. A progressive form of transport like an electric bike needs its own kind of legislation and insurance, and here’s what you need to know about how to understand the power of your equipment and how to keep it covered and road-safe.

Every watt counts - does your E-Bike qualify for bicycle insurance?

What's all the buzz about?

Electric Bicycles have become increasingly popular as a sustainable and convenient form of transport. Over and above the benefits of cycling a traditional, manual bicycle, e-bikes have the added benefits and features of pedal assist, an independent power source, a bigger range, and a more substantial output with less physical input.

E-bikes have a range of different wattage outputs. The grey area with electric bikes can be observed in the argument that they are no longer manual modes of transport, and veer into motorcycle territory, but the ability to still pedal your e-bike like a traditional bicycle keeps it in the cycling category - with limitations. In the UK, for example, your e-bike qualifies as a bicycle if its output is at or below 250w, providing powered assistance up to the maximum speed of 15.5 mph (25 km/h).

What's with the watts?

Can you insure your 750w electric bike with Sundays? Unfortunately not, Sundays covers a wide range of bicycles and their cyclists, but also uphold the legislative rules of the UK. To be able to have access to bicycle insurance and also use your electric bicycle in the same way a conventional bicycle can be used, your e-bike must have a motor of no more than 250w (this is the motor output and not the battery wattage) and propulsion assistance that doesn’t not exceed 15.5mph.

If you have an E-Bike that fits all the above requirements, insuring it may be a good idea - costly equipment like this can easily be a target for theft (and a fast getaway as long as they don’t exceed 25km/hour that is). Sundays has a comprehensive and inclusive insurance offering for electric bikes.

Our E-Bike cover includes:
  • Theft from and away from home
  • Accidental damage
  • Malicious damage
  • Replacement bike hire
  • Taxi fare reimbursement
  • Lifetime new-for-old

With our comprehensive cover, we also offer optional worldwide and accessories cover, among others. Bicycles are a lot more than just 2 wheels held in place by a frame with handlebars attached. They become reliable and conscientious choices we make everyday - that's definitely something worth insuring if you ask us.

Frequently asked questions

What are the requirements to insure an e-bike with Sundays?

To qualify for insurance, your e-bike must comply with standard UK legislation. This means the motor output must not exceed 250w and the powered pedal assistance must cut off at speeds above 15.5 mph (25 km/h).

Does Sundays provide insurance for 750w e-bikes?

No. We cannot insure e-bikes with a motor output of 750w. High-wattage bikes fall into a different legislative category (often closer to motorcycles) and do not fit the parameters of our bicycle insurance policies.

What is included in the comprehensive e-bike cover?

Our policy is designed to keep you road-safe and covered against financial loss. Standard comprehensive benefits include:

  • Theft (both from your home and away).
  • Accidental and malicious damage.
  • Lifetime new-for-old replacement.
  • Replacement bike hire and taxi fare reimbursement.

Can I get cover for my e-bike accessories or international travel?

Yes. While the standard comprehensive plan covers the bike itself, Sundays offers optional add-ons for Worldwide Cover (for traveling with your bike) and specific Accessories Cover to protect your gear.
